✍️ Sign PDF — Free & Private, No Upload
Add your signature to a PDF without uploading it anywhere. Draw your signature with a mouse or finger, or type your name in a handwriting style, then choose the page and position and download the signed file. Toolio processes everything locally with pdf-lib — your document never leaves your browser, making it safe for contracts and confidential paperwork, even offline. Looking for a free Smallpdf alternative? Toolio’s version is completely free and needs no sign-up.
Private by design. This tool runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded or stored, and it works offline.
About
This tool embeds your signature as an image onto the PDF page itself using pdf-lib, a pure-JavaScript PDF library. You can draw on the signature pad or type your name in a cursive font, place the signature in any of nine positions, scale it relative to the page width, and apply it to the first page, last page, a specific page, or every page. Because there's no server round-trip, it's fast and private — ideal for signing where uploading a document to a third party isn't acceptable.
How to use
- Drop your PDF onto the page or click 'Choose PDF'.
- Draw your signature on the pad, or switch to 'Type' and enter your name.
- Pick a position, size, and which page(s) to sign.
- Click 'Sign & Download' to save the signed PDF to your device.
FAQ
- Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
- No. Signing runs entirely in your browser with pdf-lib — the file never leaves your device, so it's safe for confidential documents.
- Is this a legally binding e-signature?
- It stamps a visible signature image, which is fine for many everyday agreements. For certificate-based digital signatures or audit trails, use a dedicated e-signature service.
- Can I sign an encrypted or password-protected PDF?
- Remove the password first with a PDF unlock tool; encrypted files can't be modified reliably without it.
- Where on the page does the signature go?
- You place it yourself - drag the signature to the spot you want and use the size slider to scale it between 8 and 50 percent of the page width. You then choose which pages receive it: only the first, only the last, every page, or one specific page number, which covers the usual case of initialling every page and signing the final one.
- Can I sign a scanned document, or does it have to be a real PDF?
- A scan works as long as it has been saved as a PDF. The signature is drawn on top of the page image, so a photographed or scanned contract signs exactly like a digitally generated one. What it cannot do is recognise text inside the scan, so it will not find the signature line for you - you position it by eye.
- Does signing change the rest of the document?
- Only the pages you selected are rewritten, and only to add your signature on top; the existing page content is not re-rendered or re-compressed. The result is a new file you download, and the original on your disk is left untouched, so you can always start over if the placement is not right.
