About
Toolio's Color Converter lets you pick any color visually or type a HEX, RGB, or HSL value and instantly see all three equivalent formats with one-click copy buttons. It also generates a five-step tint palette so you can explore lighter and darker shades of your chosen color. Everything runs client-side in JavaScript — no data ever leaves your browser, making it safe to use with brand or project colors you'd rather keep private. It also shows the nearest PANTONE Solid Coated number for your color (for example, PANTONE 185 C) — a handy starting reference when you need to move a screen color toward print. CMYK values are shown as well, but as an uncalibrated screen approximation rather than a press-ready separation — the real numbers depend on your output profile (US Web Coated SWOP, FOGRA39, Japan Color), so confirm with your printer before sending artwork.
How to use
- Use the color picker or type a HEX code (e.g. #ff6b4a) in the HEX field.
- Alternatively, enter individual R, G, B values (0–255) to start from an RGB color.
- View the converted HEX, RGB, HSL, and CMYK values — plus the nearest Pantone match — in the Conversion result panel.
- Click any Copy button next to a format to copy it to your clipboard.
- Explore the five tint palette swatches below the inputs to pick a lighter or darker shade.
FAQ
- Is this color converter free to use?
- Yes, completely free. There is no account, subscription, or paywall of any kind.
- Does it upload my color data to a server?
- No. All conversion happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to any server.
- Does the color converter work offline?
- Yes. Once the page is loaded, you can disconnect from the internet and it will still work fully. It also supports being saved as a Progressive Web App.
- What color formats does it support?
- It converts between HEX (e.g. #ff6b4a), RGB (e.g. rgb(255, 107, 74)), and HSL (e.g. hsl(11, 100%, 64%)). You can enter any of the three and get all three as output.
- What is the tint palette feature?
- The tint palette shows five shades of your chosen color at different lightness levels (dark to light). Clicking a swatch updates all inputs to that shade so you can copy its codes too.
- Does it show the nearest Pantone color?
- Yes. Alongside HEX, RGB, and HSL, the converter shows the closest PANTONE Solid Coated match (for example, PANTONE 185 C) with a one-click copy button. The match is found with the perceptual CIEDE2000 color-difference formula. Because Pantone spot inks are defined physically rather than by a screen value, the sRGB match is an approximate reference, not an exact ink.
- Does it give CMYK values?
- Yes, but treat them as a screen approximation rather than a press-ready separation. The converter uses the standard uncalibrated RGB-to-CMYK formula, which has no ICC profile behind it — real separation values depend on your output profile (US Web Coated SWOP, FOGRA39, Japan Color). The Pantone CMYK row is derived from the matched ink's approximate sRGB, not from Pantone's licensed Color Bridge data, and many spot colors fall outside the CMYK gamut entirely. Always confirm with your printer before sending artwork.
